(Shvetaashvatara Up. 3.8)rasa’m hyevaayam labdhvaa”nandi bhavati (Taittiriya Up. 2.7) maamekam sharanam vraja (Gita 18.66) maamekameva sharanamaatmaanam sarvadehinaam (Bhag. 11.12.15) The Vedas and scriptures repeatedly emphasize ‘exclusive devotion’. The word ‘eva’ , which means ‘only’ is repeatedly used to emphasize exclusiveness. The mind should be completely attached to God, and to ‘God alone’. This is exclusive devotion. Such exclusive devotion purifies the heart. How do we clean an extremely dirty piece of cloth? We wash it with clean water. With the first wash, only some dirt is removed, if it is extremely dirty. You need to wash it again and again. In the same way, the mind is full of sins from countless lifetimes. To cleanse it, will require great efforts.
